Students from the Union County Magnet High School and the Union County Academy for Allied Health Sciences received a national award from the American Cancer Society, for achieving the highest per capita amount of any high schools in the 2008 Relay for Life fundraiser. The students raised $80,000 for cancer research. Students raise $80,000 for cancer research
Seventeen-year-old Christina Karas (L) of Springfield, riding Iggy, and 12-year-old Phoebe Weiman (R) of Cranford, riding Clifford, were awarded “Outstanding Junior Instructor” trophies during Watchung Stable’s 75th Anniversary Fall Troop Horse Show sponsored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders from October 24-26. Mark Burrows (C), manager of Watchung Stable in Mountainside, presented Karas and Weiman with the awards for their outstanding service as Junior Instructors. Both Christina and Phoebe have been riding at the stable since they were nine years old. Christina Karas also was honored as top rider in the Junior Instructors class during the competition Watchung Stable Honors Junior Instructors at 75th Annual Fall Troop Show

Crafters Wanted! More than 1,000 visitors enjoyed shopping for hand-made pottery, jewelry and nature-related gifts last year at the Holiday Nature Craft Show held at Trailside Nature & Science Center. This year’s show will be Sunday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Trailside Visitor Center. Crafters are being sought to sell items including handmade gift baskets, country art, live green arrangements, wildlife paintings and photography and other objects having a nature-related theme. The fee for a 3x8 foot table rental is $25 and includes two chairs and light morning refreshments. Interested vendors should contact Susan Day at 908-789-3670, ext. 3425, or email sday@ucnj.org.
